getting stuff done (finally)

This week I was at school until 3:45-4 PM four out of five days. I had three or four different meetings, progress reports due on Wednesday and Thursday (and the whining & complaining that comes along with them), an armed intruder drill (and only a drill), tests, projects, poetry readings and essays. This means I ended up with the biggest stack of Papers To Be Graded ever, all while trying to start a new unit on Nonfiction Essays which will straddle the winter break.
But. Somehow I managed through the week, I got a lot done and I was determined to have a productive weekend (last weekend I felt exhausted and lazy, which probably added to how much I had to do last week). Yesterday started off the productivity. We did some holiday-related shopping, finally. We started with giving ourselves gifts since we decided on trying to figure out something to get the both of us and we're never good at keeping gifts secret from each other. Then I wanted to go to a few places to figure out a treat I can give my students for bringing back their signed progress reports. The last time they had reports due back it was Halloween, so I gave them Halloween candy and pencils. I was thinking of making a little holiday-related/more-winter-than-Christmas-related bag of candy and other goodies, but I found these and got a brilliant idea:

I'm making mini cupcakes! I also went to the dollar store and picked up boxes of cherry and peppermint candy canes. I think that'll do. I figured the cupcakes were a special reward for my 10th graders since I just about killed them with the end of the poetry unit: a poetry portfolio of 10+ of their poems typed, a poetry reading where they had to read one poem, a test that was pretty long and difficult on poetry AND a poetry essay that was pretty challenging for 10th grade. Most of them survived, thankfully. For my 12th graders, it's a thank you for reading Macbeth out loud and acting in front of the class twice.

I also wanted to see if I was inspired to participate in the Secret Elf bag exchange the faculty was invited to do on Thursday. I did this on Halloween with the Phantom bags and it turned out pretty fun. I didn't have anything in mind though, but thankfully, Target has a ton of winter/Christmas/holiday gift sets that teachers would love. So I made one:

My bag's pretty cute for not really being prepared to decorate it. You should see some of the other bags both this time and last--they were amazing! My Phantom bag had a witch pez dispenser, some office supplies, cute pens, and cold/flu season supplies (airborne, cough drops, lip balm, etc). I thought it was pretty useful. My Secret Elf bag this time is a lot more in line with a specific theme. I hope whoever gets my bag likes hot cocoa. I got them a cute mug with a penguin (or was it a snowman? I can't remember) drawn on the mug with another one sitting on the handle, some chocolate and a set of four different types of hot chocolate (tiramisu, creme brulee, and two others I can't remember).

After all that, I relaxed for a while and then made myself work on school-related grading or planning from 3-6. I actually did it, too. I got a lot of grading done. All I have left are essays and the short answer part of the poetry test.

Last night we went with Shannon and Dan to a cute boutique to see two bands play.
While we were waiting for the second band to start, Dan and David looked at some of the records they had for sale in the store. That's when Shannon and I realized that they looked like twins once again:

The second band was just okay, so we dipped out early and headed next door to the Village Cafe, which we'd all heard a lot about. The guy that does the Food Network show Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives went there apparently. We didn't try the food, just had a few beers and talked until we all got tired.

weekend update

This weekend, it actually felt like fall. The temps have cooled down, the trees are starting to change, and I am super excited. Autumn in Virginia is simply amazing, equal to a Michigan autumn (which is probably why I like it). Virginia has Michigan beat during springtime, though. That's due to VA having beautiful, fragrant flowering trees and bushes, and Michigan does not.
But VA kinda has Michigan beat this fall, seeing as how VA's state government isn't shutting down on Monday. David told me about it last night and I hope that everyone we know and love in MI comes through this okay. As much as it has the possibly to seriously suck, maybe it's exactly what Michigan needs? A wake up call, rock bottom, etc. etc. Where else can you go, you know? That's only a guess; my wishful thinking. Anyway, like I said, I hope everyone comes through it okay and it doesn't go to the point of many, many people losing jobs (like MI needs any more of that). What a crappy situation.

But, anyway, due to the beautiful weather and having extra time and energy, we headed downtown. We even went early enough to catch some of the famer's market! I love walking through the downtown/CW area in fall. We found some nice gummy candy, as well as some lambic, a Shakespeare stout (pretty delish) and a sparkling sake that knocked our socks off. We watched some movies, did the laundry, lazed around--all the good stuff weekends have.

Tomorrow I'm taking the day off from school. I've felt really rushed and disorganized and used our dentist appointment tomorrow afternoon to take the whole day off, rather than a half day. Our first grades our due by mid-day Tuesday, so tomorrow will give me a lot of time to plan both of the next units and get those grades it. I'm a little worried though: it's the first time my students will have a sub. Hopefully, they do a good job.

I'm sad I missed this epsiode live last night, cause I missed this.

Oh, Kanye. I love your music, your big mouth (that always gets you into trouble), and your great sense of humor about it all. Way to show them how to be a celebrity.

I am incredibly excited.
First off, the past two nights have actually been fun! There was laughter! New people I've heard about and finally met! Exciting plans for the future! Pool, beer & wine, spoons, poker, nannies, lightbulbs, Star Wars naked jokes, the list goes on...
Okay, let me start making sense. Thursday night was supper club, the last one of the summer, but it was much larger than the summer ones. I finally met Leanne and Diana, who David told me I would like (and he was right!), I got to sit in a very comfortable papasan chair and play Loaded Questions with a huge group of people. There were lots of inside jokes created and brought up again.
Last night was the meet and greet they had for the first years. We went last year and it was awkward, but useful. This year was much better seeing as we actually knew people. I enjoyed staying in the corner, playing (really badly) pool with Megan and chatting. David invited people over for poker afterwards, which I didn't automatically groan at since I would actually have other people to talk with! Hurray! Actually, the ladies decided to go see The Nanny Diaries instead, since we were right around the corner from the movie theater. I read the book last summer and it wasn't horrible and neither was the movie. We almost took up a whole row, which was awesome. When we got back to the apartment, the guys were playing poker and chess in the dining/living room, so the ladies ended up in our computer room, playing Spoons (which I haven't played since 10th? 11th? grade? So it was tooootally fun!).
Basically, it was a great way to end the summer. Two nights of fun, meeting new, awesome people, making Facebook friends, making plans and ending up with a Ladies Night with some gorgeous, intelligent, hilarious women every 3rd Friday of the month.

I'm also excited because Monday starts all the school hullabaloo again. As much as I love sleeping in, not having to rush to finish my to do list and be incredibly tired at times, I also miss being a teacher. I miss my ladies at work, I miss my students, I miss exposing them to new & exciting literature-and-writing-related things. And the classroom! Oh, to have a classroom of my own! I can only imagine how that will change things. I will be able to find things and be better organized! And be able to set up things early instead of having to do it in 5 minutes! Oh, and the laughter. The belly-aching, teary-eyed laughter that comes with the school year. It's one of the best parts and it's what keeps us all sane. Hopefully, this year will be better (or at least on the same level as last year) and not really horrible.

Oh, and I'm going back to dance class. :)

This weekend was an eventful one. We hosted a poker/game night on Friday. It was tons of fun and a great chance to get to know some people in David's programs. They're hilarious. I got to chat with two others in the "wives/girlfriends" category, which was nice. After a few of the dudes got out in poker, we played Apples to Apples (of course). After poker was finished, we played a 12-person game of Catch Phrase. A few people left and the remaining people watched Nip/Tuck with us.

Saturday we met our first Nor'easter. A nor'easter is a weather thing that happens on this coast that was new to us. It rained a lot. That's an understatement. David forgot to put my rear two windows up after running an errand Friday night and four hours of dumping rain drenched a good chunk of my backseat. My car is still drying out. The whole area is drying out. This picture is of Monticello Road, right near us.

We did make it to Plan 9 to pick up our weekly allowance of music. We checked out Books A Million and found they have a great selection of magazines and a pleasant environment. Also, we checked out the sandwich place Subway Station, which always smelled really good. It was amazing. Almost as good as the Pita Pit, Scott.

Sunday, we went to see Sandra Day O'Conner speak. What an amazing woman. I have two videos of her and tried to take a good amount of pictures. I'll put them up on the flickr site soon. She has quite the sense of humor and an amazing point of view. Very intelligent and very fair. It was a nice way to see her, too. It was a completely informal feeling set-up. We sat on the floor of the University Center (as David put it: The Bernhard Center/Bronco Mall with class.) like an assembly at an elementary school. Kids were everywhere. They had a panel that asked some great questions and then the crowd got to ask some questions. It was wonderful.

After the assembly, we were walking back to downtown/the car and saw a HAWK EATING A SQUIRREL. It was CRAZY! I wasn't the only person to take pictures, either. That bird was huge and it was just tearing that squirrel apart and daring anyone to come near it. It was pretty amazing. I called Meg afterwards and told her about our eventful day.

This morning was relaxed. I was able to sleep in until 7:15, get up, slowly get ready, go to WaWa (it really is a glorified 7-11... with amazing food) and get some coffee, and drive into work. Today was our first full Parent/Teacher Conferences day. It went from 10:30-6:30 and wasn't too shabby. We got to go out for lunch from 2-3, so everyone was starving by then, but it was a pretty laid back day. I finished The Color of Water because I didn't have too much left and didn't have too many parents come by. Ah well.
